Let's take a look at the typical year for a wrestler. During the off-season, the wrestler is in the gym lifting weights. The workouts are intense. The wrestler eats normally, sustaining muscle, and adding strength to their body. The wrestler might compete occasionally in a tournament or go to a wrestling camp. The wrestler is learning more moves, and skills, along with improved strength. All is good. Things look great for the upcoming season!

Then the season arrives. The wrestler decides to cut 15-20 lbs. to move to a lower weight class, where they will be big, strong, and ready for any competition. The wrestler eats very little, runs a lot (even with plastic suits on), spits, uses saunas, etc. to make weight. The wrestler makes weight. The wrestler has a good season, making weight each week, and binging after each match.

BUT THE WRESTLER COMES UP SHORT OF THEIR POTENTIAL!

The wrestler doesn't understand. He practices hard, really hard! He dropped two weight classes, and makes weight each week. He drills after practice, and works as hard or harder than anyone else in the mat room. He doesn't strength train during the season because he practices so much, and doesn't have the time or energy to work out. Besides, all that hard work in the weight room during the off-season has made him really strong!

Or did it?

If you are cutting weight for wrestling, and want to be the BEST your potential will allow, make sure you:

1. Keep Up Your Strength Training

During the off-season you want to work to gain as much strength as possible. I recommend training 3 times each week in the weight room, working the muscles that are used for wrestling. Be consistent and document your progress. Always strive to add a little more weight or repetitions. During the wrestling season, YOU HAVE TO STRENGTH TRAIN! You will not keep strength gained during the off-season if you neglect training during the season. If you are cutting weight, it is even more important to keep up your strength training. If you are cutting weight, practicing, and wrestling in dual meets and tournaments, your body is using its own muscle for food. You can prevent some of this by getting in a full body strength training workout every 4-5 days.

2. Eat More Frequently

Don't starve your body to make weight! If you starve your body, you are slowing your metabolism down. Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. A calorie is a unit of energy. By starving, you will cause a rebound effect, and have even more trouble making weight next season. The answer lies in trying to lose fat, not muscle and water. You do this by eating more frequently. Four smaller meals each day will allow you to lose body fat while sparing muscle, give you energy to wrestle hard, and be strong the entire match.

3. Give Your Body The Correct Amount of Calories

To find out how many calories your body needs to keep up muscle while cutting weight, take your current body weight, and multiply times 13. This is the minimum number of calories you need to consume each day.

4. Eat a 40-30-30 Ratio

Now that you know how many calories you need to cut weight and still keep your muscle and strength that you've built up, you need to eat the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats. 40% of your calories should come from lean proteins (egg whites, turkey, lean beef, whey protein powder, skinless chicken). 30% of your daily calories should come from complex carbohydrates (multi grain bread, baked potato, sweet potato, brown rice, oatmeal), and 30% of your calories should come from unsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts). Usually you don't have to figure in the fats other than a tiny bit of oil on a salad, because the meats that you consume will have a small percentage of fat that will suffice for the day.

5. Don't Jog excessively If Your Goal Is To Make Weight

Nothing is more grueling than a tough high school or college wrestling practice. You shouldn't get in the habit of jogging for miles, and miles each week in order to lose weight. First of all, it will not give you the endurance for wrestling like good old-fashioned live wrestling in practice will. If you try to lose weight by jogging, you will start eating the muscle off of your body. Aerobic activity is NOT an efficient means of losing fat. A controlled meal plan is the answer.

6. Don't Dehydrate

In order to wrestle at your best, and have your body working efficiently, you need to have all of the body systems working optimally. Each of your body systems requires water. If you have to lose a couple of pounds to make weight after you have followed the above tips, then you will restrict your water intake. Restricting water intake is not the same as not drinking water at all though. You still need to give yourself 3-4 ounces of water every 3 hours on days that you are trying to make weight. Remember, this is to keep up your strength. You need to plan well in order to do this right. Don't weight until two days before, and get drastic in your weight loss system.

7. Stay Away From Sugar

Wrestlers who cut weight by eating very little and doing excessive jogging tend to get sugar cravings. Sugar has no place in your wresting meal plan. The only time my clients consume sugar is immediately following an intense strength training session. If you are within 3 or 4 lbs. of your weight class, you might want to consume 60 grams or so of high glycemic carbohydrates (sugar) on the form of grape juice or apple juice within 20 minutes of your strength training session. This replenishes the body's glycogen stores and helps with recuperation. In general, stay away from sugars. They have no long-term positive effects on your energy. They are much more likely to be converted and stored as fat.

I'm always hesitant to talk about supplements for football training. While there is a short list of products that can really help your football training, they are not magic bullets. And, as any coach reading this will know, we've all had "the conversation:"

Player: Coach what supplements can I take to get bigger?

Coach: Well, what are you eating every day?

Player: Well, I had some cheerios, a Red Bull, a burger and a snickers bar today.

Coach:...head explodes.

So, before we get into the subject of how to use supplements to get faster and stronger for football at all, first realize that they are, as the name implies, supplements. As in, they supplement your normal eating, they don't replace it. If you're not eating correctly, start. Then, when you have that down, you can worry about supplements.

Second, some of the best supplements for football players are both very cheap and not very well hyped. It's hard to justify rolling out a major ad campaign for a bottle of something...that's better saved for the + bucket-o-worthless-chemicals.

When it comes to supplements to improve football ability both in the weight room and on the field, go:

Here are the Top 6 Supplements to help you get faster, bigger, stronger and more explosive for football.

1. Protein

Five of the 6 supplements in this list are what we consider "base supplements." They're not exciting, but they work and they are necessary. Protein powders being the base of the base.

Can you train without taking a protein shake? Yes, of course. But, why would you? I know some guys use this as a badge of being "hard core," whatever the hell that is...but, really, do you want to be that guy sitting in the gym eating chicken out of a Pyrex bowl, stinking the place out?

Protein is excellent for football training, especially to high school and college players because it is so easily carried around. You can quickly drink it in the halls, on the way to class or at your locker. You can try, as I did in vain, to eat actual food in class, but, most teachers get mad when you pull out giant roast beef sandwiches (no, I don't have enough for everyone, damnit)

It's also very cheap. While it may seem that putting out - 35 up front is expensive, the truth is most protein shakes, made at home with two scoops in water, come out to around .77. For 50+ grams of protein and minimal carbs and fat, that's impossible to beat.

And, its ideal post workout. You train hard so get the nutrients into your system as quickly as possible. This helps you recover faster. Recover faster - train harder - get bigger, stronger and faster on the field. Simple.

But, let's clear one thing up...protein is just food in liquid form. No more, no less. All the bells-and-whistles and marketing hype is just that. Don't expect to start drinking a few shakes and wake up looking like Arnold.

Start off with two shakes per day. One between breakfast and lunch and one post workout. A lot of experts are suggesting you drink 1/3 pre workout, 1/3 during, and 1/3 of your shake after lifting. This is fine as long as your stomach can handle it. In the summer, it can be tough so test it out and see how you do. Your shake does no good for you if its coming out instead of going it.

2. L-Tyrosine

L-Tyrosine is one of the most exciting supplements I've ever come across for football. It is an absolute life saver on those days where no matter what, you just can't seem to get your brain right for the game. This isn't a base supplement but it's a staple around here. Most people have never even heard of this amino acid, so what's the big deal?

Again, it's tough to hype up a supplement that costs less than 10 bucks.

L-Tyrosine is a precursor to adrenaline and blocks the movement of Tryptophan (the stuff in Turkey that makes your fat uncles fall asleep after Thanksgiving dinner) across the brain. This gets you "up" without becoming jittery or cranked out like Ephedrine used to do.

This is huge for both training and football games. Combined with some caffeine it is an unbelievable pre-game/workout supplement...capable of waking you up, firing up the CNS and getting your brain right.

Don't over use this stuff. Like everything else on Earth, the more you use it, the more the body adapts. In-season, save it for game day. In the weight room, save it for the big P.R. days.

About 45-mins pre lift or pre-game, take 3 - 4 L-Tyrosine caps. You can combine these with a caffeine tablet for maximum effect. You can also use one of Joe DeFranco's "DeFranco Energy Bars," if you need a pre-training meal, as these have a lot of quality protein and a nice dose of Tyrosine and caffeine.

3. ZMA

ZMA might be the most underrated supplement in the world when it comes to recovering from training. Studies have shown that athletes, especially football players, are deficient in magnesium. The harder you train, the more the minerals are burned up.

This can lead to poor sleep quality and achy joints.

By taking ZMA (Zinc, Magnesium and vitamin B6) you get a much more restful, deep sleep. This alone makes it almost anabolic in nature. Studies have shown that simply by supplementing with ZMA you can increase your testosterone levels.

You spend a ton of time training, lifting, running, practicing football - you have to balance that with an equal amount of recovery and there's nothing better for recovery than sleep.

Biotest's ZMA is probably the best out there, you should definitely go with that to start.

4. Caffeine

This one is tricky. If you're under 18, I'd stay away from this one. I realize most high schoolers drink coffee and those femme latte-crap drinks, but, something about putting caffeine in pill form causes problems. Plus, you're young, you should be wired through the roof anyway.

For the more mature football player, caffeine tablets can be a life saver. They get you focused, get the nervous system fired up, and wake you up. This is especially helpful after a long day of classes, work, or playing PS3.

Most guys just drink coffee but this can be problematic. Most convenience stores water down their brew to the point that you're essentially drinking acidic, brown water. Even places like Startbucks and Dunkin Donuts can be inconsistent in how much caffeine per cup you're getting.

Best bet is to but a bottle of caffeine tablets. They're super cheap and safe. One tab is equal to a cup of coffee. And, all you need is one. They are much more potent than actually drinking your caffeine.

Take one tablet 45-minutes prior to a big workout, practice or game. Again, save it for the big ones...if you keep hammering away, it'll lose it's effectiveness. You should take a week off of caffeine every 8-weeks or so. That means completely; no tablets, no coffee, no diet soda. If you are really suffering during that week then you've been over-relying on the stuff.

If you really want to have a huge day, combine one caffeine tablet with 3 - 4 L-Tyrosine tabs. If you can, drink this down and take a very short nap (15-minutes). As you wake up, the cocktail will start kicking in and by the time you hit the gym or the field you'll be ready to kill.

5. Fish Oil

This is another base supplement and something about it just bores the hell out of most football players.

Who cares about heart health? Don't you know high school football players are Unbreakable like Bruce Willis?

Even if we put the heart-health benefits aside, Fish Oil is still extremely useful for football because of it's anti-inflammatory properties. Every time you lift, every time you practice, and especially when you play a game, you are creating inflammation. The longer you stay this way, the longer you're sore, tight, and unable to train at 100%. The quicker you squash inflammation, the faster you can get back to training or the field at full strength. This alone is invaluable.

Back when I played in High School, I was much stronger than anyone, setting school records by my junior year. Everyone would break my chops and ask what special supplements I was taking, steroids I was jabbing in my butt, or some special creatine water I'd drink. Truth is, and this is disappointing to most people, that I got that way because I was absolutely obsessed with recovery. I'd go crazy to sleep extra, eat right and kill inflammation as quickly as possible. Because of this, I could train more than everyone.

Think about that next time you have an extra 20-bills in your pocket. Are you going to buy some faux testosterone pill and pee out your money or are you going to do the smart thing, make the boring choice and get some Fish Oil so you can recover faster and train harder than everyone?

6. Multi Vitamin & Mineral

Another boring, base supplement that is absolutely indispensable. If you want to perform at the highest possible level, every cell in your system has to be functioning properly. Taking a good multi vitamin & mineral can help ensure that your body is replacing the nutrients that your burning up in your training. And, despite what most know-it-alls will tell you, you do need extra vitamins and minerals. Maybe the average American fat-ass who sits on the couch playing video games doesn't need them, but, a football player does.

Even if you eat a ton of different protein foods and "eat the rainbow" in vegetables, there's no way you're getting in all the minerals you need. The fact that most football players are woefully deficient in magnesium, zinc and copper should tell you why you need to supplement.

But, you have to get a good product. Taking Centrum will get you no where. A good multi product will require you to take 2 - 3 pills per day to get the full dose. Take one with breakfast, one pre-workout, and one at night. This ensures that you get a nice, steady flow of nutrients and you replace anything you lose quickly.

Not because I hate soy but because I hate the way the Soy industry has lied to us and poisoned us for profit. You must read Kaayla T. If soy is so bad then how come most people think it is good? This is why:

First of all, the origins of soybean use, 3000 years ago, in ancient China, Japan and Indonesia came out of poverty and famine. The soybean did not serve as a food until the discovery of fermentation techniques.1 Soybeans were used for crop rotation to add nitrogen to the soil.

These ancient peoples would have rather eaten fish and meat they just did not have enough. Soy Protein or Tofu evolved as a poor man's meat substitute. It was discovered that fermenting the soybeans gave them a better flavor, made them more edible and medicines could be created from the soybeans-like Nattokinase. It is the fermenting of soy that makes it healthy in small quantities. "Marketing costs money, especially when it needs to be bolstered with "research", but there are plenty of funds available. Soybean producers pay million annually to support United Soybean's program to "strengthen the position of soybeans in the marketplace and maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets for uses for soybeans and soybean products." Private companies like Archer Daniels Midland also contribute their share. ADM spent million for advertising during the course of a year."1 ADM is, of course, the corporation that brought us Hydrogenated Soybean Oil or "Trans Fats". The marketing is working. "Sales from soy milk alone have risen from million in 1980 to over 0 million in the US last year."1

The best marketing strategy for a product that is inherently unhealthy is, of course, a health claim. 1

Claims that eating soy can "lower cholesterol levels" and "reduce cancer" have been approved by the FDA after heavy lobbying and "alleged research" from the soy industry supposedly proving a health benefit. The opposite is actually true. Soy contains "antinutrients" that are toxic and carcinogenic to the human body.2

Soy protein (Tofu) is the spoogy waste leftover from making soybean oil. This sludgy byproduct from the soy oil industry was considered a waste product and animal feed until recently. By the way, animals do not like soybeans either and will only eat them when they are starving to death.

When I first started weight training I picked up a tub of vanilla flavored soy protein powder and started chugging down some chalky, ill tasting shakes with glee. I thought I was doing myself a big favor but little did I know I was actually reversing any chance of muscular gains. Scanning through a recent "Muscle Magazine" I saw an article supposedly reviewing the different protein powder supplements available on the market today. The article pictured animated protein tubs with friendly faces on them and the names "Soy", "Whey", "Casein" and "Egg". Whey and Soy were portrayed as the best choice for health, low cost and nutritional value. Now listen carefully to what I am going to tell you next. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU! Whey and Soy protein are waste products from the food industry, cleverly disguised as "health food" and heavily marketed to the American consumer.

Soy Protein Isolate is a heavily processed product. A slurry of soybeans is acid washed and then mixed with an alkaline solution. Acid washing in aluminum tanks leaches high levels of aluminum into the final product. The curd is then dried at high temperatures completely denaturing the final product and making the protein ineffective and drastically altered from what nature intended. Animals on soy feed have to actually be given lysine supplements for normal growth.2

Don't trust Men's Fitness magazine either. "Open a copy and you will find pages and pages of full color ads for soy based candy bars and instant beverages promoted as a way to create the macho man with perfect abs. Sadly-ironically-most issues contain the requisite article advising these super-built Lotharios how to have great sex. Were Men's Fitness to warn it's readers about the fact that soy lowers testosterone levels in men, advertising revenues would dry up and the magazine would fold."2 (Kaayla T. Daniel)

Maybe you have heard of Edamame, the new "healthy" baby green soybean pods. While eating at a local Sushi restaurant recently I noticed tables of customers around me happily munching on Steamed Edamame appetizers. Surely this must be good, right? Wrong! Edamame is crap too! The good news is these baby soybeans still in the pod are tender and more palatable. They also contain less of the harmful plant estrogens that diminish testosterone. So I would compare them to light cigarettes. They are much less harmful than regular soybeans that are loaded with anti-testosterone hormones!

Supporters of Soy debunk milk and supporters of milk (from pastured animals) debunk soy. They are both right and they are both wrong. Small amounts of milk from pure pastured animals would be nice and ideal but not necessary. Small amounts of fermented soy products like Nattokinase and Miso prepared the ancient way are OK and considered medicine in the East.

If you are not eating organic, you should know that 99% of the non-organic soy we eat is genetically modified and has one of the highest percentages of contamination by pesticides of any of our foods.1 This processed, genetically modified "American Soy" that we know, is poisoning us and causing illness and disease.

Eating Soy protein causes lowered Testosterone levels. This is especially troubling to men and bodybuilders. To a bodybuilder, soy protein is like Kryptonite! The plant estrogens will rob you of your manhood, shrink your muscles and lower your sex drive. Ancient monks used to eat extra tofu to help them to easily maintain their vows of celibacy.2

Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known; those of zinc are less so.1 I met someone recently who was vegetarian and ate lots of tofu because she "loves animals". For gods sake don't eat a waste product from a crappy bean because you love animals! Love animals and eat raw nuts, "quality" beans and maybe some eggs. I love and respect animals as well and I am often astounded by the awesome beauty of nature's wild creatures. Humans, however, did not rise to the top of the food chain just to step aside and eat tofu because we love animals. I love them, respect them and eat some of them too!

Dump your milk down the sink! Spit your Tofu out the window! Throw your milk and soy products in the dumpster today and be healthier tomorrow!

Because of glutathione's mucolytic action, NAC (brand name Mucomyst) is commonly used in the treatment of lung diseases like cystic fibrosis, bronchitis and asthma.

2. Milk Thistle, Silymarin

Milk thistle is a powerful antioxidant and supports the liver by preventing the depletion of glutathione. Silymarin is the active compound of milk thistle. It is a natural liver detoxifier and protects the liver from many industrial toxins such as carbon tetrachloride, and more common agents like alcohol.

3. Alpha Lipoic Acid

Made naturally in body cells as a by-product of energy release, ALA increases the levels of intra-cellular glutathione, and is a natural antioxidant with free radical scavenging abilities. It has the ability to regenerate oxidized antioxidants like Vitamin C and E and helps to make them more potent. ALA is also known for its ability to enhance glucose uptake and may help prevent the cellular damage accompanying the complications of diabetes. It also has a protective effect in the brain.

8. Selenium

Selenium is a co-factor for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. Selenium supplements have become popular because some studies suggest they may play a role in decreasing the risk of certain cancers, and in how the immune system and the thyroid gland function. However, too much selenium can cause some toxic effects including gastrointestinal upset, brittle nails, hair loss and mild nerve damage.
